30 Favourite Resources For Learning Photography

When you start out in photography it’s important to recognise that you are likely embarking on a lifelong endeavour. The learning photography ‘curriculum’ doesn’t just involve cameras and how to set them up to achieve quality images. It also includes the secrets of composition, lighting and editing. Getting to grips with software like Photoshop, Lightroom and a growing array of digital tools that help get the very best results from photographs can be daunting. In this post I list 30 favourite resources for learning photography that I have used here at mfimage.

Different people adopt varying routes to learning photography. Some are literally self-taught, others study through college or university courses, others take advantage of paid workshops offered by numerous professionals and respected organisation such as the Royal Photographic Society (https://rps.org)

Whatever the route, in my view, the wealth of information online provides numerous resources for learning photography. This has certainly been central to my learning. It can, however, take time to find the most useful sites. Depending on your particular photographic interests those that matter will vary. But wouldn’t it be great to have a quick reference guide to some of those that warrant your time?

Here is one such list. It consists of those individuals and organisations that have featured most in my learning photography portfolio. It’s not comprehensive and there are numerous more excellent resources for learning photography out there. Keep looking and you will find those that best fit your needs.

Scrolling back through the tips I have looked at over the years (and saved for reference) shows me that Fstoppers and Shutterbug are my most frequent ‘advisors’. However, they are far from alone. Here are 30 sites which I have found useful and to which I regularly return. I have grouped them under general headings, although some sites that I think of first for tutorials also cover camera gear and vice versa. These sites all offer free information. Some also have paid content.
