Does It Matter Who Captures The Image?

Of late, it seems I see more and more references to photography features and exhibitions which highlight the work of, for example, black photographers, female photographers, young photographers. It prompts the thought: ‘does it matter who captures the image?’

Is it not the case that every photographer has a unique perspective borne of background circumstances, creative approach, specific areas of photographic interest and the like?

Surely, a good photograph is notable in its own right, irrespective of who took it and the equipment used.

There may be powerful stories to tell which are based on personal knowledge and experience. A particular individual may have a unique insight into the stories he or she chooses to tell through photography. Whilst they are not mutually exclusive, one might argue that it is the specific individual’s ‘take’ that matters rather than the ethnic, sex or social grouping to which the person belongs.

My personal preference would be to achieve recognition as a good photographer, rather than a good young, old, white black or female photographer.
