Most photographers hit periods when motivation wanes or the pressures of daily life make it hard to get out and about with a camera for a dedicated shoot. There are, however, numerous ways to keep the photographic spark alive. My ‘top three’ are: Never leaving the house without a camera; on-line learning; and seeking inspiration from leading photographers.
Never Leave Home Without A Camera
Going to the shops, taking the dog for a walk, travelling to see friends and relatives and family outings are just some of the occasions when photography may not be the first priority. Nevertheless, any one of these might just present an unexpected chance for a great photograph. Don’t miss that opportunity. Carry a camera with you. Not your main, heavy gear just a pocketable camera – such as a Sony RX100 or Ricoh GR111 – that you will scarcely notice but may just let you grab a memorable image. Failing that, don’t forget your smartphone. Remember great photographs aren’t necessarily technically perfect. It’s all about capturing the moment.

Captured on the way to the shops. You never know when a photo opportunity may arise.
On-line Learning
One of the defining aspects of photography is that there is always something more to learn. A spare few minutes here and there can be enough to pick up new tips from the internet. They can add to knowledge and can be put into practice when time allows. Finding and subscribing to a few favourite sites can be really useful and new information feeds enthusiasm.
Leading Photographers
When the opportunity arises to listen to leading photographers, it can be truly inspirational. If this can be in person, so much the better but when time is short it may not be possible to fit such sessions into a busy schedule. Searching for ‘photography’ podcasts is a time-efficient alternative. Once you have found a few you like, it’s easy to listen in when you are otherwise engaged. One of my personal favourites is the ‘Frames Photography Podcast’ which includes talks with well-known photographers. I regularly listen in whilst doing a workout. It’s amazing how quickly you seem to get through an exercise routine when you are, at the same time, engaged in a subject you love. You don’t just get fitter, you get inspiration for your next shoot!
